Without a doubt, candles and other home fragrance items are more than just functional decor. To us, they have a significance that is almost magical - in the way that the body can translate different scents and then transmit those scents throughout our system to have a wide variety of effects on us physically, mentally and emotionally. Yes, they’re pretty and have a positive affect on the environment.. but along with that, there is so much to be said behind the science of scent and memory connection, that we wanted to share some of those details with you. It’s one of the most fascinating topics to us, so we hope you’ll enjoy learning more about it as well.
We don’t just sell candles, we want to educate our customers on topics no one else is talking about - because we have a love for learning about things more extensive than what so many other companies are selling you. It’s more than a product here - it’s knowledge.
The scent and memory connection is a fascinating phenomenon that has been studied for many years.
OUR SENSE OF SMELL:
Did you know our sense of smell is closely linked to our memory and emotions more so than any other sense? When we experience a particular scent, it can evoke strong memories and emotions associated with that scent, transporting us back to a specific time or place.
The olfactory system, responsible for our sense of smell, is directly connected to the brain’s limbic system, which is associated with memory and emotion. This direct connection allows scents to bypass the conscious thinking process and directly trigger emotional and memory responses. This is why certain smells, such as the aroma of freshly baked cookies or the scent of a specific perfume can instantly transport us back to our childhood or remind us of a loved one.
Let’s Dive Deeper...
DIRECT PATHWAY:
Unlike other senses, the sense of smell has a direct pathway to the limbic system, which includes the hiccocampus and amygdala. The hippocampus is involved in the formation and retrieval of memories, while the amygdala is associated with emotions. When we smell something, the information bypasses our conscious thiking and directly stimulates these areas, leading to a strong emotional and memory response.
EVOLUTIONARY SIGNIFICANCE:
Throughout human evolution, our sense of smell played a crucial role in survival. Smells are closesly linked to our experiences and memories because they helped us identify potential dangers (like spoiled food or predators) or locate sources of food. This evolutionary significance may have led to a strong connection between smells and memory formation as well.
NEUROPLASTICITY:
The brain is highly adaptable and capable of forming new connections, a phenomenon known as neuropasticity. When we experience a particular smell in a significant or emotionally charged event, the brain forms neural connections associating that scent with the memory and emotion. These connections can be long-lasting, and encountering the same scent in the future can trigger the recall of that memory.
EMOTIONAL ASSOCIATIONS:
Emotions have a strong influence on memory formation and retention, also. When we experience an event with a particular smell, the emotional reponse associated with that event becomes intertwined with the scent. This emotional association enhances the memory’s salience and increases the likelihood of it being recalled when the scent is encountered again.
CONTEXTUAL CUES:
Smells are often part of a larger sensory experience that includes visual, auditory, and tactile cues. When we encounter a familiar scent, it can act as a contextual cue, triggering the recall of associated memories and experiences. The combination of different sensory cues strengthens the memory retrieval process.
